I was supposed to work for 3 months but I ended up working for 3 years at the homeless shelter in the kitchen.
One day the dishwasher was late to work and I just took over his job. I had done work like that in school so I knew the ropes. It was thankless task but one that had a sense of accomplishment - cleaning dishes. Then they put me on the line to serve and eventually I did kitchen stuff. It was hard work, but satisfying.
My son came with me over Christmas time to help. I think he liked it. He told me we should make a Christmas tradition. It was an enriching and humbling experience.
