Lajos Molnar my Hungarian Gypsy violinist friend
Lajos with his family formed a musical group; Kristin Molnar (violons), Alexandra and Catherine Molnar (violoncelle) and Mélinda Molnar (piano). I met him when he was playing a gig in the street with his youngest daughter; he went to great lengths to tell me he played with great orchestras, and it wasn’t normal for him to work in the streets, but we laughed about it later. He was an extraordinary violinist and human being.
He had escaped Hungary during the Uprising, with his wife, and came to the West, ending up in Quebec by way of Mexico and Paris. He was fun to be around, always full of stories and good cheer. Once I found him despondent because he had watched a TV program about the Nazis; his family had suffered. They were gypsies.
We spent many a day conversing and laughing and have ‘man’ talks together.
